NHS Trust
There are different types of NHS Trust. For example, hospitals are run by Acute Trusts, ambulances by the Ambulance Trust, and Primary Care Trusts are responsible for doctors, dentists, opticians and chemists.
In order to run such a huge operation, the NHS spends around the same proportion of its total budget on buildings, equipment, training, catering and cleaning, as it does on drugs and supplies. As a result, NHS Trusts must meet a number of environmental, health and safety standards as part of their day to day responsibilities. This protects the welfare of their employees, patients and the public.
