Crematoria
More than 400,000 cremations are now performed every year (Cremation Society of Great Britain).
The increase in popularity has led to some environmental consequences. For example, the mercury, atmospheric dioxins, chloride and formaldehyde emissions that UK crematoria release are harmful and reduce air quality.
Mercury is toxic; it accumulates in the air and water, and can damage the brain, kidneys, nervous system and unborn children. As up to 16% of all mercury emitted in the UK comes from crematoria (from tooth fillings), DEFRA aims to cut their mercury emissions by half, by the end of 2012.
How we can help
