Radiochemistry

ESG’s radiochemical laboratory offers a broad range of radiochemical testing on a variety of sample matrices, providing our nuclear and environmental clients with an expert analytical support service.

ESG is able to provide a complete client-focused analytical service, testing both radioactive and non-radioactive determinands in-house, ensuring that the projects we support enjoy the reassurance of accurate, accredited and timely results.

Our skilled team provides UKAS-accredited radiochemical analytical support for monitoring and decommissioning projects for the nuclear sector. Furthermore, ESG are able to offer  MCerts-accredited chemistry analysis plus asbestos testing on radioactive samples.

Radiochemistry Services Include:

  • Radiochemical analysis
  • Nuclear fingerprinting
  • HSE approved bioassay service
  • In-house MCERTs accredited chemistry and asbestos testing
  • Decommissioning characterisation and waste acceptance criteria testing

  • Contaminated land analysis
  • Potable water analysis for drinking water regulations
  • Import/export food and feed analysis

Oil and gas

  • NORM analysis for the oil and gas industry

Supporting the nuclear industry

ESG’s radiochemistry team provides expert analytical support for decommissioning, demolition and characterisation programmes by providing accurate results, on time. The team’s analytical approach utilises a complete range of in-house radiochemical, chemical and asbestos methods on a wide variety of samples, including:

  • Soils
  • Waters
  • Concretes/aggregates
  • Tarmacs
  • Metals
  • Roofing felts
  • Timber
  • Oils

Additionally, ESG is one of only a small number of HSE approved providers of bioassay services as part of a dosimetry service to monitor the safety of radiation workers within the UK nuclear industry.

Supporting the environmental sector

In the environmental sector we measure radiation levels in water, soil and vegetation, for radioactivity levels including providing data for the Environment Agency monitoring programme: Radioactivity in Food and the Environment. The majority of the laboratory procedures undertaken are accredited by UKAS to ISO17025.

Supporting the food/drinking water sector

ESG provide a full range of radiochemical analysis for utility companies to ensure potable water meets drinking water regulations. Furthermore, food matrices are tested and certificates of analysis are provided to confirm radiation levels in foods for import/export.
