Coal Science
ESG provide coal services at both ends end of the supply chain and as such have a proven track record of their capability and independence in the field of coal sampling and analysis.
We have an extensive knowledge in all areas of coal science due to the wealth of experience amongst our time served staff, and have the capability to provide expert technical support and advice in all areas of coal sampling and analysis.
We offer ICCP accredited coal petrology and provide a range of petrographic analyses to major generators and coal traders, in particular the identification of contaminant fuels such as petroleum coke, and vitrinite reflectance analysis to establish the component coals in imported cargoes.
We were also the chosen laboratory to carry out petrographic analysis of coal recovered from HMS Titanic.
The determination of the geological age of coal is offered through palynological analysis where the fossilised spores and pollen grains contained in the coal are extracted and identified.
The microscopical techniques of palynology and petrography have together been widely used for over 20 years to source the origin of coals or match coals for a wide variety of users.
