Geotechnical Drilling and Sampling

Understanding the behaviour of the ground is integral to any geotechnical investigation.  It is important to use the right combination of drilling, sampling, logging, testing and analysis.

ESG uses its in-house holding of high quality plant and equipment to deliver safe, accurate soil acquisition and management, coupled with extensive laboratory testing to deliver the best possible data for effective, factual, interpretative reporting.

Boring and Drilling

Our equipment ranges from hand held samplers to 20 tonne rotary rigs and marine drilling platforms. Our ground engineering experts provide a versatile service with a proven track record and ability to cope with difficult and restricted site access across all ground conditions when collecting soil and rock samples. Our drilling methods can core to depths of up to 300 metres and include:

  • Land and marine cable percussive boring
  • Land and marine rotary drilling with choice of flush medium
  • Wireline techniques
  • Environmental drilling including controls against cross contamination carried out using strict procedures to comply with current requirements and legislation

All our Lead Drillers and most other crew members are registered with the British Drilling Association (BDA) and are subject to an annual audit which includes an assessment of safe working practices. 95% of the companies operatives have NVQ level 2 in Land Drilling which contains a safety module. All operators have CSCS card, 93% with skilled worker cards.

Window and Windowless Sampling

Sampling is carried out using our own track/wheel mounted dynamic probing units as well as hand held jacks and percussive hammers to extract cores as window or windowless samples.

Trial Pitting

In order to study or sample the structure of the sub-surface trial pits are hand dug or machine excavated safely under the control and supervision of an experienced engineer with a thorough understanding and knowledge of geology and soil mechanics. Efficient excavation, spoil and reinstatement management ensures that the sites we work on remain hazard free.
