Asbestos Risk Management

Managing the risks of Asbestos in the Workplace

ESG offers a complete range of environmental services including Asbestos Consultancy.

Our combination of consultancy, onsite surveying and analytical services in our prefferred UKAS accredited laboratory allows us to provide our clients in both the public and private sectors with the necessary information to solve a wide range of asbestos related issues.

The Regulations

Up to 1/2 million premises across the UK contain asbestos. With estimates of premises containing asbestos being anywhere up to 1/2 million across the UK, asbestos surveying and consultancy is a rapidly growing market. We undertake asbestos surveys for many clients which  comply with the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2006 (CAR).

Regulation 4 came into force on 21st May 2004.

Under CAR, property owners, occupiers and managers have a legal duty to record the location and condition of asbestos and presumed asbestos containing materials (ACMs). This duty is currently restricted to non-domestic premises and the communal areas of tenanted domestic premises.

In addition to this, a risk assessment of the likelihood of exposure to asbestos is required for each of the materials encountered and this information needs then to be compiled into an asbestos management plan based on the condition of the materials. This includes monitoring and reviewing the condition of asbestos and presumed ACMs.

At ESG we have trained, experienced and qualified surveyors (holding the BOHS S301 & P402 proficieancy module) who have conducted surveys and compiled asbestos registers in accordance with the HSE's MDHS100 Regulations and have a thorough working knowledge of current HSE guidance on all aspects of asbestos management.

Surveys are carried out professionally and extensively in order to meet the demands of clients as well as relevant legislation. When producing an asbestos survey report, we include:

  • asbestos register information on a room by room basis;
  • a risk assessment of asbestos exposure;
  • recommendations for management of materials sample location plans;
  • if required, we produce a management plan of ACMs based on periodic re-assessment of materials and updating of the register.

ESG is experienced in carrying out the 3 specified types of survey:

  • Type 1 - Location and assessment (presumptive survey)
  • Type 2 -  Standard sampling, identification and assessment survey (sampling survey)
  • Type 3 - Full access sampling and identification survey (pre-demolition/major refurbishment surveys) based on HSE requirements.

Survey Experience

Our experience includes council residences, schools, hospitals, industrial and commercial units and Offices.

Our extensive survey experience includes council residences, schools, hospitals, industrial and commercial units and offices. An example of a recent survey undertaken was one on behalf of a developer at a former cinema in southeast London.
