Water Treatment and Hygiene Services

water safety hygieneESG's Water Safety and Hygiene Services business provides a range of water safety management solutions offering independent expert water safety advice and consultancy, from the collection of samples, through to testing, risk management, control schemes and management systems.

In doing so, it supports clients in achieving legal requirements for water safety, including the HSE Approved Code of Practice ACoP (L8) for the Control of Legionella Bacteria in Water Systems and the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations (COSHH). With an estimated 250 cases of Legionnaires’ disease in the UK each year, and approximately 18% of these resulting in fatalities, ESG’s Water Safety and Hygiene Services team offers companies an assurance that they are compliant with L8 regulations and that any water hygiene risks are minimised.

Services include:

ESG’s Water Safety and Hygiene team are highly experienced, independent experts offering a flexible approach with individually designed solutions to suit client requirements.  Our network of regional offices provide national coverage, whilst our in-house accredited laboratories ensure the utmost integrity and quality of results.

Potential Risk Areas
Legionella bacteria are common in nature and can easily colonise in man-made environments such as hot and cold water distribution systems where they are able to multiply at temperatures between 20°C and
45°C.   Areas of particular risk are those containing dirt, sludge or scale and in stagnant waters and plant. Systems at risk include:

  • Water systems incorporating a cooling tower
  • Water systems incorporating an evaporative condenser
  • Hot and cold water distribution systems
  • Showers
  • Other plant and equipment containing water which is likely to exceed 20°C and which can release a spray or aerosol during operation or maintenance

Water Hygiene and Legionella Risk Assessment
ESG’s Water Safety team of assessors and microbiologists undertake surveys and provide risk assessment reports on all aspects of the system design, installation, condition, operation and usage that present a Legionellosis risk. This is based on guidance in ACoP L8, BS 6700 and the Water Regulations. Following completion of the Risk Assessment a comprehensive report is provided which concludes with a detailed list of prioritised risk rated recommendations on the most suitable course of action to take.

Chemical and Microbiological Sampling and Analysis
Chemical and microbiological sampling and analysis for Legionella, TVC’s, E.coli and coliforms are undertaken in our UKAS accredited laboratories.

Ongoing Monitoring Programmes
ESG’s field-based teams can undertake scheduled visual inspections, temperature checks, monitoring and sampling of water systems to support compliance with ACoP L8.

Cleaning and Chlorination and Remedial Works
ESG can manage works such as the cleaning and chlorination of tanks and outlets as well as undertake
remedial works.

Consultancy
Consultancy services include providing a Compliance Audit to review existing policies and procedures along with advice and expert guidance on the development of Policies and Management Systems. Retained support can be provided through the provision of an appointed expert to support clients with the Legionella management programme. Enforcement liaison is also available.

Electronic Management System
Web-based electronic log books enable clients to effectively manage their systems, monitor control activities and ‘manage by exception’.

Training on Water Safety Compliance
ESG offer a number of courses to help clients learn more about their obligations and the risks of Legionellosis including: Legionnaires’ Disease – The Role of the Responsible Person; and Legionnaires’ Disease – Operation and Maintenance of Water Systems.
