IPPC Application at Caythorpe Gas Storage Facility
Friday 30 April 2010
Client: Warwick Energy Limited
Date: 2006 and ongoing
Value: £25k Consultancy fees
Caythorpe near Bridlington has operated as a conventional on-shore gas extraction facility since 1992 contributing gas to the national grid network and as a power station since 1997.
Reserves from the Caythorpe gas field itself are reducing and in order to assist with the national demand for increased gas storage, proposals have been developed to recharge the field with 'imported' gas. This is a significant change in site operations and one requiring careful environmental consideration with a change to the operator's IPPC licence.
CL Voelcker have been working with Warwick Energy Ltd to produce and submit the IPPC application to the Environment Agency for this change in activities. The application addresses the detailed proposals for the scheme and its relationship to the existing process. In addition it considers the potential environmental impact and sets out measures for long term environmental monitoring.
The IPPC application submitted to the Environment Agency consisted of a site specific Site Application Report, assessment of the potential environmental impacts of the site using the Agency's H1 software and completed standard application forms with detailed supporting information in accordance with relevant sector and horizontal guidance notes.
The Permit for the site was determined and issued in April 2007 after due consultation and consideration.
Once operational, the Caythorpe Gas Storage Project would add approximately 5% to the UK’s gas storage capacity.
