Helping to Reduce Landfill
Friday 22 May 2009
With recycling increasing in importance, Soil Mechanics Material Testing Division is helping producers and buyers of aggregates used in construction contribute to sustainability via a comprehensive testing and advisory service which helps them comply with product quality protocols.
One such protocol is WRAP which stands for Waste and Resources Action Programme and has been developed by industry regulators to enable recyclers to convert suitable waste into aggregates that can be sold on the open market.
The protocol is an important step on the way to converting inert waste into usable materials, and in so doing, reduce the amount of waste going to landfill.
To support this Soil Mechanics Materials Division has recently managed and implemented testing programmes for various County Councils and Groundworks suppliers to:
- Test aggregate properties and interpret standards
- Assist in selecting the right testing regimes and test frequencies to satisfy the WRAP protocol and the requirements of the specifying standards including EN 13242, EN 13285 and the Specification
for Highway Works
- Interpret test results and advise on quality control
- Perform audit testing on purchased materials and visit recyclingplants to provide an expert technical audit of the production process and systems
