Greenfield Soil Survey

Natural ‘as-dug’ soils are a valuable resource that should be carefully managed.

Our greenfield soil survey reveals the nature of site soils and provides advice on soil management techniques to ensure they are preserved for reuse.

Our service has been produced specifically for landscape architects, landscape contactors and consulting engineers involved with soft landscaping schemes, providing site specific soil information that is normally not covered by environmental, ecological and geophysical studies.

Service Benefits

A greenfield soil survey will benefit you by helping to:

  • Understand the nature and quality of site soils;
  • Maintain soil quality throughout the development process;
  • Improve soil quality to a required level, as necessary and where possible;
  • Accurately estimate site soil volumes;
  • Identify physical hazards or plant based limitations to reuse of the soils;
  • Design planting schemes suited to site soil conditions.

Service Description

There are three key elements to this service:

Soil Survey A member of the Institute of Professional Soil Scientists performs a survey of the site soils, examining the topsoil (and subsoil) to provide information on topsoil depth, drainage potential, variations in soil texture, stone content and presence of deleterious materials and evidence of pernicious weeds.
Laboratory Analysis Laboratory analysis is performed to categorise the soils in terms of their physical and chemical makeup
Interpretative Report A comprehensive report considers the site soils in relation to the proposed soft landscape scheme. Practical recommendations are provided that can be readily incorporated into tender/specification documents.

Full recommendations are given to maintain/improve soil quality as appropriate

Testimonials

ESG through its Soil Mechanics brand were set a tough challenge by RWE npower and met it full on. From the engineer's perspective, it was evident from the start that many parts of the business would need to pull together to achieve the client's demanding programme. Pembroke in November was never going to be easy, but staff on site, in Bridgend and in the labs demonstrated a team commitment to match and on occasions exceed the client's expectations.
